Games like terraria 20201/24/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() I can only really understand cases where it's physically painful for someone to look at something. It's honestly super weird to me that some people seem to have that experience. I have literally never once in my life been pushed away from a game because of the art. The near entirety of art made by artists in a committed capacity looks great. Time to be clear about something because people are in here hating on gorgeous games like Octopath, Viewtiful Joe, and motherfucking Hollow Knight. The big areas with the torches, Lake of Rot, and Mogh's palace are kind of whatever. My praise is mainly for Nokstella, the Ranni section of Nokron, a few of the midgame Ansel passages, and to a lesser extent Deeproot. The quality gap being so large doesn't help things either. I was pretty disappointed with how small and short areas like Nokstella were on my second playthrough. ![]() But it's not all that large and I definitely didn't spend what I would consider a massive amount of the game there. The underground feels gigantic because it's relatively distinctive and considerably more dense than the overworld. When they're brought up and gushed upon, my first thought is always something along the lines of 'but what about the rest of the game?' You still spend most of the game running through fairly basic forests and mountains, even with the above and more taken into account. Every area in Elden Ring has at least a few cool moments. But I mean, you're describing cool designs here and there. I wish I had access to the glorious alternative version of Elden Ring everyone else seems to have played. Voxels yeah I can understand getting tired of those but I can see why they would fit the second category for some. Vanillaware yeah so their super exaggerated characters can be hard to swallow but the Renaissance and Flemish art references are done with remarkable artistry and great taste Niddhogg 2 looks fine for what it's going for. Several dozens games that don't necessarily look bad, but they all look the same. Then there's styles I didn't always dislike but went from being something "different" or at least unusual, to being in every game under the sun "trying to look different". Most high Res 2D where everything is orthogonal and structured and organized like classic pixel art (that Shantae pic someone posted earlier is a good example). Either stick to be philologically accurate or don't.Ī lot of generic anime (I don't dislike anime per se, but there are so many games I can't tell apart). "Enhanced" pixel art, with gradient overlays, inconsistent resolutions etc. ![]()
